On a very large archive on a spinning drive, grid tiles could give up and show broken-image icons while the study was still busy reading the drive. Tiles now shimmer as "preparing" and quietly keep trying for as long as the study runs, filling in as thumbnails become ready. Broken-image icons are gone for good; a photo that truly can't be read shows a clean empty tile instead.
